The First Romance Novel I Remember Reading….
Thank you, Ashley, for hosting me today at Dr. Pepper Diva!
Ohhh. The first romance novel I remember reading? Kinda mystery there. Allow me to explain.
I didn’t start devouring romance books on a regular basis until I was senior in college. At that time, I was living off campus with a group of girls and they’d pass various paperbacks amongst themselves. At the time, I was neck-deep in college courses (with my eye on graduation) and considered reading anything other than what was required by my professors a total waste of time. That is until a lazy Sunday afternoon when I found myself bored out of my skull.
I picked up one of these “trashy” novels, opened it to somewhere in the middle and began reading. Two hours later, I’d finished the book then went back to page one and read it in its entirety. Man was I hooked! I couldn’t wait to read more of my roomies’ paperbacks. And yes, my grades suffered, but oh well! J
Do I remember the name of that book or the author? No, hence the mystery. What I do remember is it was a historical romance, set during either the American Revolution or the Civil War or a similar time period. And it was a swashbuckling tale with ships and pirates. There was also the name Beauchamp, Beaumont, or something like that.
The premise (as best as I can recollect) goes like this:
An English woman (the heroine), in urgent need a “disposable” husband so she can get passage to America, intends to marry a condemned prisoner. The man she chooses is an American (the hero) set to be executed within the next few days. Before he consents to marry her, though, he demands a kiss. She agrees and they marry. However, she walks out without granting him his kiss with the sound of him fighting the guards fading in her ears. The hero is either pardoned or escapes—I don’t remember switch—but he gets free and is determined to find his “wife” and obtain his rightful kiss.
Fast forward to the next scene I can recall: The heroine has been kidnapped by pirates. The hero sword fights the pirate captain for his lady’s safety, winning, of course. As a reward, she grants him an entire night of being his “wife” in every sense. (Nudge, nudge. Wink, wink.)
The last thing I remember clearly is that the hero is quite rich, but for whatever reason he doesn’t want the heroine to know about his wealth. He also has a twin sister. At the end of the story, it’s when the heroine meets the sister that she learns the truth about her husband, leaving the good guys to win. As usual.
Y’all got that? LOL.
Now, if anyone can solve this mystery about the name of this book or the author, I’ll giveaway another $10 gift card. (That’s on top of the ones already offered for this blog hop.)
Thanks again, Ashley, for having me here today!

Author Bio:
I’ve always loved stories, especially romances. For me the only thing better than reading a romance is writing one. That and drinking red wine while eating dark chocolate. My manuscripts have been finalists in major writing contests, including the 2010 RWA Golden Heart®.
I live in Reno with my husband of thirty years and our two pampered pooches. Please visit me at www.lyndabailey.net. Or drop me an email Lynda@lyndabailey.net.
Happy Reading!

The Elusive Flame by Kathleen Woodiwiss? It sounded like one of her stories and I found this pretty quickly. Now you can read it again!

Good guess! I’m anxious to find out the title myself.

Ok…now I going to be wondering until you find out who wrote that book and what the title is! It vaguely sounds like a Jennifer Blake tale. If all else fails, there is a section on the All Romance e-books site where you can post synopses like that and ask readers if they remember the book…

The book you described sounds like Kathleen Woodiwiss’ “Shanna.” I remember it vividly because that book (and “Ashes in the Wind” and “The Wolf and the Dove”) turned me into a romance reader as well.
Love Battle Born Love’s storyline and cover, Lynda!

Someone else guessed one of her books but it was a different one. I’m looking forward to finding out what it is.
