“Becoming a grandmother is not one of life’s free choices. You can pick your pet, your alma mater, and your spouse, but when and where you become a grandma is entirely up to your kids. You don’t expect it, and you don’t quite know how to respond.”
Bryna Nelson Patson will have you laughing hysterically in her book, How to be The Perfect Grandma.
“Listen politely, then do what you want. Just like your kids did to you.”
“Pick your battles. Trust me, you’ll have plenty.”
“Never, ever, ever let anything happen to the kid on your watch. But if it does, lie.”
Her “rules” tell you what you need to know so that you can be an important part of your grandchildren’s life.
“Your kids and/or their spouses will intrude, interrupt and interfere. But persevere, circumvent them, do exactly what you want, and lie (with dignity) when needed.”
“If you want the kid, promise to protect her, defend her, and sacrifice your life for her. Promise anything, but get the kid.”
“No matter what is needed from Grandma, if it’s for the good and welfare of your grandchild, do it! The beauty of being a grandmother is you can go home and pass out later.”
She even as “rules” for grandpas.
“Rules 1 through 33 for Grandpa: Just show up!”
I am not a grandmother, not even a mother, but I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Patson takes her stories and tells them in a humorous way that will keep you laughing for hours. It would make a great birthday, Mother’s Day, or just a “Thank You!” gift for any grandmother, soon-to-be grandmother or anyone who is curious about parenting.
